The Education

At the Secret Dyery we offer a variety of workshops and creative retreats to help you to gain a better understanding of the world of natural colour. We believe it is our duty to share our skills and knowledge to empower those of you who are simply colour curious, or who aspire to up skill and become more expert in this field. The Secret Dyery is a place where you can explore sustainable textiles thorough a variety of approaches and nourish your creativity, naturally.

SILK SCREEN PRINTING WITH NATURAL DYES

9th & 10th MARCH 2024

2 DAY WEEKEND WORKSHOP

Learn how to extract colour from locally foraged plants, biowaste, roots, berries and bark and then transform them into toxic-free printing paste. Using silk screens and stencils, you will develop your own surface pattern designs, layering up the colours to produce some really exciting eco-friendly prints. You will have a range of prints to take home with you as well as detailed notes, so you can continue your practice at home.

NATURAL DYEING AND PRINTING

Harness nature's palette and learn how to create a wide range of colour using plant-based dyes and print pastes. Learn how to scour and mordant your fabrics, extract colour for both dyeing and silk screen printing and produce your very own range of sustainable, eco-friendly and toxin-free fabrics to take home with you.  You will be taught how to note-take accurately for repeating future recipes, as well as how to combine and modify colour to expand your natural palette. You will be given a guide to take home with you so that you can continue to develop your practice.

SHIBORI DYEING WITH INDIGO

WEDNESDAY 3rd APRIL 2024

Learn the ancient Japanese art of manipulating cloth through tying, stitching, knotting and clamping to produce your own unique Shibori designs. Once dipped in our freshly made indigo vat, your patterns will be revealed when the fabrics are lifted from the dye and  exposed to oxygen. The alchemy of Indigo dyeing is truly magical and when combined with shibori, the effects are stunning.

BOTANICAL INK MAKING

SATURDAY 6th APRIL 2024

HALF DAY WORKSHOP

Transform locally foraged berries, bark and flowers, kitchen biowaste and spices into your own bottles of eco-friendly ink. Originating in Egypt and China over 4500 years ago, soot from the fire was the main pigment used to make black. We will begin with homemade charcoal and then move onto colour, varying the pigments and combining them to create your own unique palette

During the afternoon session, you will be taught the basics of botanical drawing, working from still life arrangements sourced from local hedgerows. You will be working with the fresh ink you have made that morning.

During this 2 day multi-disciplinary course, you will learn how to achieve a wide range of textile effects, through naturally dyeing with locally foraged botanicals, experiencing the alchemy of indigo dyeing, being  mindful with the ancient art of shibori and enjoying the surprise results of bundle dyeing.  You will also  Learn how to scour and mordant your fabrics and be taught how to note-take accurately for repeating future recipes.
