The Secret Dyery is a natural dye and print works. Our aim is to push the boundaries of sustainable textiles through innovation of traditional dyeing methods and printing techniques. Our focus is on utilising natural fibres, locally-sourced botanical dye matter and GOTS-certified dye extracts that use environmentally friendly production processes. We minimize our water consumption through a rainwater harvesting system, installed underneath our dye house. The exhausted dye matter is fully compostable and is either used to fertilise our dye garden or re-used as natural silk screen printing pastes in our print workshop. We use GOTS-approved mordants made from renewable materials and will never use heavy metal-based mordants such as tin and copper.
We aim to collaborate with local sustainable farmers and use seasonal bio-waste to create a localised colour palette in order to build a fully organic, sustainable and circular system which harmonises with nature and creates opportunities for the local community through education and practice. We hope to inspire the fashion and interiors industries and demonstrate that natural colour can be achieved without the use of toxic chemicals which are a health risk to people and the environment. Through our ‘slow’ dyeing system, we aim to push the boundaries of textiles practice and collaborate with artists and designers to produce innovative products. We are able to upscale our dye recipes to accommodate commercial orders as well as working with individuals and artisans on special commissions and smaller scale orders. We are fully committed to continuing to develop our professional practice in order to build a safe, sustainable and circular system.
